It's going to cost Kane County and Algonquin village residents to use the Longmeadow Parkway toll bridge when it opens in 2022. It just won't cost as much as it will for other people – unless you're a truck driver.

The Kane County Board's transportation committee gave preliminary approval to place a toll of 95 cents for most vehicles crossing the bridge over the Fox River.

 

U.S. stocks flat as health authorities focus on China virus

Major U.S. stock indexes ended little changed Wednesday after an early rebound rally faded in the final minutes of trading.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq composite eked out tiny gains, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished slightly lower. Gains in technology, financial and health care stocks outweighed losses in industrial, energy, real estate and other sectors.

Investors had their eye on an international effort by health authorities to monitor and contain a deadly virus outbreak in China that has spread to the U.S.

An Algonquin woman died in a car crash on Tuesday night in Lake Barrington, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were sent about 11:40 p.m. to a traffic crash with injuries on Kelsey Road in the area of Flint Creek Drive, Lake Barrington.

Cases of new viral respiratory illness rise sharply in China

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese health authorities urged people in the city of Wuhan to avoid crowds and public gatherings, after warning that a new viral illness that has infected more than 400 people and killed at least 17 could spread further.

The appeal came as the World Health Organization convened a group of independent experts to advise whether the outbreak should be declared a global emergency.

The number of new cases has risen sharply in China, the center of the outbreak.
