Man stabs 2 in London, shot to death

LONDON – A man recently released from prison after serving time for terrorism-related offenses strapped on a fake bomb and stabbed two people on a busy London street Sunday before being shot to death by police, officials said.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Lucy D’Orsi said police identified the attacker as 20-year-old Sudesh Amman.

 

Al-Qaida in Yemen claims deadly Florida naval base shooting

CAIRO – Al-Qaida's branch in Yemen claimed responsibility Sunday for last year's deadly shooting at the Naval Air Station Pensacola by an aviation student from Saudi Arabia.

The shooter, 2nd Lt. Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, was a member of the Saudi Air Force in training at the base. He opened fire inside a classroom at the base on Dec. 6, killing three people and wounding two sheriff’s deputies before one of the deputies killed him.

Jeep posts Super Bowl commercial shot on Woodstock Square

Along with the big game, those in the Woodstock area also had something else exciting to watch on Sunday, as Jeep officially aired a commercial it shot in the historic Woodstock square during the Super Bowl.

Jeep posted the commercial on its Facebook and Twitter pages earlier in the day, filmed partly on the Woodstock Square and based on the movie "Groundhog Day." As of Sunday afternoon, the video had gotten about 290,000 likes on Facebook and been viewed 3.4 million times on Twitter.

McHenry County road districts name Pritzker as defendant in township elimination lawsuit

McHenry and Nunda Township Road District officials have named Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker in a lawsuit challenging a decision to afford voters to right to eliminate townships.

Pritzker signed a law in August allowing McHenry County voters to dissolve the area's 17 townships through referendum. The new law is an initiative to reduce property taxes in McHenry County by reducing levels of government. If a township is dissolved, its operations, property and employees would be transferred to the county government.

Woodstock Willie predicts 6 more weeks of winter during Groundhog's Day event at square

Some came from around the area, while others came from other states, waking up in the early morning hours, to see Woodstock Willie predict six more weeks of winter during Woodstock's annual Groundhog Day Prognostication on Sunday.

Speaking at the ceremony in the Woodstock Square, Rick Bellairs, chairman of the Woodstock Groundhog Days Committee, said the crowd was by far the biggest the annual event has ever drawn.

A polka band played a variety of songs to mark the occasion and wake Woodstock Willie from his winter nap.
