Honduran Crystal Lake high school student facing deportation grateful for community's support

After spending nearly four months detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, 18-year-old Honduran Crystal Lake Central High School student Meydi Guzman-Rivas wanted nothing more than to lie in her bed and listen to music.

Guzman-Rivas, who now lives in Crystal Lake with her high school counselor, Sara Huser, has kept herself busy studying, listening to her favorite Mexican and bachata songs and trying to re-create her most-loved Honduran meals.

Daybreak revealed a landscape littered with blown-down walls and roofs, snapped power lines and huge broken trees, leaving city streets in gridlock.

Water shut off multiple days at Leggee Elementary School in Huntley over broken water heater

A faulty water heater led to water services being shut off as Leggee Elementary School 13723 Harmony Road, for several days, Huntley District 158 officials said.

A letter sent Thursday from Leggee Elementary School Principal Scott Iddings to families said that water was temporarily turned off on some of the the school’s drinking fountains as a precaution.

Authorities pleaded with people to stay indoors, at least until daybreak could reveal the dangers of a landscape littered with blown-down walls and roofs, snapped power lines and huge broken trees.

The McHenry County Workforce Network is offering workshops to former employees of Bowes In Home Care in Crystal Lake who have been laid off.

These workshops are set for 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m.

 

Cary's Trinity Oaks Christian Academy celebrates student's cancer-free status

The gymnasium at Trinity Oaks Christian Academy in Cary was filled with joy, cheers and happy tears on Monday morning as the school celebrated one student’s news that she is now cancer free.

Around the school, posters with a purple background and gold heart proclaimed “Quinn is a Survivor.”

In the academy’s gymnasium, Quinn Snare’s fellow students waited, purple and gold ribbons in hands, for her to enter.
