Wonder Lake Fire Protection District asking for tax levy increase in referendum

The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District is asking voters to approve a referendum March 17 election ballot increasing its property tax levy.

An average homeowner with a $100,000 home currently pays $153 in taxes to the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District. If the referendum is successful, that would go up by $33, so the homeowner would pay $186.

The amount of taxes currently able to be levied for the fire district is $963,994.

 

McHenry man who barricaded himself in home faces sexual assault, child pornography charges

A 24-year-old McHenry man who barricaded himself in a Crystal Lake apartment Friday night is facing multiple felony charges, including predatory criminal sexual assault and child pornography offenses, after being apprehended.

Crystal Lake police had been dispatched to the 500 block of Darlington Lane about 4:30 p.m. Friday over a report of a burglary in process.

McHenry County Community Development Division receives national honor

The McHenry County Community Development Division earned national recognition for its work on Pearl Street Commons, a 25-unit development built in 2018 to cater to veterans in need and people with disabilities.

The department was honored during a Jan. 31 ceremony with a 2020 Audrey Nelson Community Development Award.

LAS VEGAS – Bernie Sanders scored a commanding victory in Nevada’s presidential caucuses Saturday, cementing his status as the Democrats’ national front-runner but escalating tensions over whether he’s too liberal to defeat President Donald Trump.

Body of missing 95-year-old man found in unincorporated McHenry

The McHenry County Sheriff's Office confirmed Saturday that a deceased elderly male found in the area of 2400 S. River Road in unincorporated McHenry was that of a 95-year-old man who went missing Friday.

The sheriff's office had been in search of Stanley E. Szczesny, who last was seen 3:30 a.m. Friday in the 2500 block of Scheid Lane in the McHenry area. When his neighbor went to check on him at 8 p.m., he was gone.

Szczesny was described as 5'5'', white and weighing about 125 pounds.

 

Woodstock North grad returns as part of BrassTaps Duo

Now performing as part of BrassTaps Duo, a Woodstock North High School graduate will return to his alma mater to encourage students to drum to their own beat.

Known as a star drummer in high school, Anthony DeMartinis joined with tuba player Evan Zegiel in 2016 as the two earned master’s degrees from the University of Michigan. They since have performed their contemporary, yet classical brand of chamber music throughout Michigan and beyond as BrassTaps Duo.
