Human Race set for Oct. 1 as a fundraising run for area nonprofits

The Human Race is coming to Jacksonville, offering a fundraising opportunity to area nonprofit organizations, schools, civic and religious groups.
The 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Walk/Run kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery, 111 Busch Drive. Check-in and registration runs from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m., and costs $40 for 5K timed runners and free for walkers, runners or those on skates, their fee supported by donations from friends supporting their favorite cause. Wear a costume and win prizes, and dogs are welcome to join in..

Crew of USS New York to hold remembrance ceremony at Mayport on 15th anniversary of 9/11 attack

The crew of a Navy ship with a bow forged with recycled steel from the wreckage of the 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center will hold a remembrance ceremony Sunday at Mayport Naval Station for the 15th anniversary of the attack.
The USS New York (LPD-21) is one of three ships in the Iwo Jima amphibious ready group based at Mayport since 2013.
The ship’s bow is forged with 7.5 tons of steel from the wreckage of the twin towers.

 

Jacksonville-based CSX CFO projects a slide in stock value for third quarter of trading

Jacksonville-based CSX Corp. officials forecast a decline in earnings per share of trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange.
In a speech in Boston on Wednesday, CSX Executive Vice President and CFO Frank Lonegro said the company is looking at a slide in stock prices for the third quarter of trading.
“Third quarter earnings per share are expected to decline slightly from second quarter levels,” Lonegro said in a prepared statement.

 

Disabled American Veterans offering counseling, claim filing assistance for free in Northeast Florida

The mobile service office for Disabled American Veterans will be in Northeast Florida starting Sept. 20 to provide counseling and claim filing assistance for veterans and members of their families.
The help is offered for free, like all services provided by the nonprofit organization.
Veterans interested in more information about the services can contact Robert Anderson at (727) 319-7444.
The assistance will be provided Sept. 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at DAV Jacksonville Chapter 1, 1439 Parental Home Rd.

 

With first election behind him, Judge McGillin looks forward to full six-year term

Judge Howard McGillin Jr. was one of those rare people happy to return to work Tuesday following the holiday weekend.
McGillin was glad to know he still had his job — just one job — after months of full-time campaigning to remain a family court judge in St. Johns County.
In his first election cycle as a sitting judge, McGillin won a full six-year term in last week’s primary election. To retain the position, McGillin defeated Linda L. Gaustad with 54 percent of the vote.

 

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown and aide to face judge for talks on their fraud trials

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown and her chief of staff are scheduled to face a federal judge Wednesday to talk through separate issues surrounding legal counsel for their upcoming fraud trials.
Brown is supposed to update U.S. Magistrate James R. Klindt on her hunt for a new attorney, while staff chief Ronnie Simmons and his lawyer will review whether past legal clients will interfere with Simmons’ defense.
