Qualifying began Monday for Effingham elections in the May 24 general primary and Nov. 8 general election and so far there are no big surprises. Many of the candidates announced their intentions to run before qualifying began. The only candidate to qualify so far who hadn’t already crossed Effingham Now’s radar is Delmons White, a Baptist pastor who will challenge Vickie Decker for the Board of Education District 5 seat. In another Board of Education race, Lamar Allen has qualified for re-election to the District 3 seat. In partisan races, the only Democratic candidate to qualify as of Tuesday afternoon is Elizabeth Hursey, who is running for re-election as clerk of court. Republican candidates who have qualified so far are: Linda McDaniel, for re-election as tax commissioner; Wesley Corbitt, former Rincon city manager, for chairman of the county commission; Wendall Kessler, for re-election as chairman of the county commission; Forrest Floyd, for re-election to the District 1 county commission seat; Reggie Loper, for re-election to the District 4 county commission seat; and David Exley for re-election as coroner.
