Chatroulette Isn't The Only Site Brought Down By The Big Wang

Chatroulette Isn't The Only Site Brought Down by the Big Wang

Stories about Chatroulette's spiraling traffic caused by guys showing their joystick every 10 seconds brought back memories of another site brought down by the same bodily member.

A while back - five or six years ago - cell phones were shipping with built-in cameras and internet connections. The creator of F'd Company, Philip J. Kaplan, had a great idea - create a site that would allow cell phone users to instantly post photos taken with their phones to the internet. The site was mobog.com. In terms of user interaction, the site was kinda similar to Chatroulette - you hop onto the website and instantly meet random strangers via their mobile photo uploads. Kaplan promoted it on his then popular F'd Company website, and it was an instant hit with his users. Traffic grew, and all was going well ... until the Big Wang reared its ugly head (sorry). The number of pics of guys proudly flashing their humble little bro eventually caught up with the site's unique visitors. When the number of unique visitors could be measured by unique wankers, Kaplan threw in the towel and focused his attention on his other creation instead - the ad network AdBrite, which I currently use, and is completely Penis-free.

  • Live-Blogged The Golden Globes at MWB
Yesterday, I live-blogged The Golden Globes -- for various reasons. First, it gets traffic. Second, I might as well do something useful while watching TV. Lastly, I was looking forward to seeing Ricky Gervais host the event again. Nothing against Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, but he’s my favorite. A google search revealed that the last time I did this for this award show was More

There’s been lots of news lately regarding Facebook Home. I use Facebook on a daily basis, but I’m not sure if I want them to take over my phone. I don’t even want Google to take over my phone; the first thing I did with my new phone was get rid of their search bar. More

Betaworks bought Digg, the website, for about half a million. It’s a complicated sale. Linkedin acquired the patents, and Washington Post got the talent (the engineers). The first thing Betaworks did was relaunch the site on August 1st. I noticed because their RSS feeds stopped working on Wopular. More

  • The Circle of Ads: Zynga Using Facebook Ads
When I first saw the headline “Facebook Places Ads on Zynga” on The Wall Street Journal, my mind almost fell into an infinite loop. Nope.Turns out Facebook is testing out their own ad network on Zynga. More
