The Winter Park Express still will carry passengers to and from the Grand County ski area even as Amtrak announced that it will halt special trains and charter services. In a notice to employees, Amtrak said running the side trains caused operational distractions, didn’t earn enough profit and at times delayed paying customers on scheduled trains, according to Trains, a trade magazine for the railroad industry. Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the announcement doesn’t affect the ski train, which is in its second year of a three-year contract. If the train were to stop after the contract expired, Magliari said that would be unrelated to this week’s announcement. The Winter Park Express returned in January 2017 after the previous ski train stopped running in 2009.
