ALBANY — It was the first day of school and the kids looked around, waiting for someone to go first.A girl, about 10, bounded up to the whiteboard and, writing in swoops and swirls and dots, spelled "Welcome" in her native Farsi.A boy followed, shy at first but gaining confidence with each step, and used a blue marker to spell out "¡Bienvenidos!" just below his schoolmate's message.A line began to form, each student eager for their own turn, and the scene repeated itself throughout first period, as the young immigrants and refugees settled into a new classroom in a new school in a new country with new people every way they turned.One of those people was state Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia, who showed up at the North Albany Academy school building Tuesday morning to meet students and get a first-hand look at the Albany International Center, a new program the city school district is launching this fall for students who are new to the English language.
