Walk by the cat cages at the Effingham County animal shelter and expect to be swatted by Smudge. The cat with beautiful markings lets passersby know that she wants attention. “She’s very sweet and affectionate,” said Shelter Director Lorna Shelton. She estimates the cat that was brought in as a stray is about 1 year old. When people walk close to her cage, she reaches out and tries to grab them, trying to get some attention. Also up for adoption this week is Gal, a shepherd-retriever mix that’s been at the shelter “quite a long time,” Shelton said. The dog that is about 3 years old was surrendered by her owner.
