They are the ones you usually see using a "little machine". They are responsible for placing witnesses under oath and providing a verbatim transcript of testimony.

A scopist is a professional who provides computer-aided transcription (CAT) services for court reporters. The scopist receives the reporter's translated, unedited, unresearched notes on a computer disk or via modem or email.
