The majority of the district has been administered by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus since 1974. where it is divided into two Districts, Iskele and Gazimagusa (or Magusa). Localities in the north are shown here. Up until the talks of September 2008, these districts were not recognised internationally, and sovereignty remained as part of the Republic of Cyprus. In practice, Republic of Cyprus administered only southern parts of the ancient district of Famagusta, Ammochostos District consisting of the municipalities of Agia Napa, Deryneia, Paralimni and Protaras.
