Belize is located on the Caribbean Sea, east of southern Mexico and northern Guatemala.Formerly the colony of British Honduras, Belize has been independent since September 21, 1981. The capital is Belmopan. Administratively, Belize is divided into six districts: Belize, Cayo, Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, and Toledo.
