Benin is a country in West Africa, bordering on Togo, Nigeria, Niger and Burkina Faso. It was called Dahomey until 1975. Benin is a democratic state with free elections, but has a literacy rate of only about 41% (2005), and 33% of the country's population is estimated to live below the poverty line (estimation from 2001).
