Spina Bifida is a neural tube birth defect where the spinal column doesn't close completely. There are 3 different types of this condition. Occulta is usually harmless. There is a gap in some of the bones of the spine, but there is no opening on the back.Meningocele is when the protective coverings (meninges) come through the open part of the spine, but the nerves are protected by a fluid sac. Myelomeningocele is the most serious form. The meninges and spinal nerves come through the opening in the spine, causing nerve damage.
