Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) is a serious, contagious, sometimes deadly, viral respiratory disease. It first appeared in China in 2002 and was named a global threat in March 2003. Symptoms include a high fever, headache, general discomfort, and body aches. Some people have diarrhea. In 2 to 7 days, a dry cough may start. Most people get pneumonia. SARS is spread by sneezing, coughing, or touching an infected surface and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
