Topics: Writing Circles : NYC News Girls Union

[Copied verbatim from central website]The New York City Newsgirls' Union is, simply put, an enormous turn-of-the-century writing and role-playing circle inspired by the 1992 Disney movie/musical Newsies. The first Union website, the Lower Manhattan Lodging House, was founded on March 29th, 1999, by Maria Hanton (known to most of us as Goldie). The website met with such success that she opened Midtown Lodging House. Soon, the Bronx, Harlem, and other spin-off sites were born. In an effort to provide some organization to this rapidly growing fictional "Newsieverse", the house leaders united to form the NYC Newsgirls' Union later that year. In the three years that the Union has been around, it has grown considerably in size to host lodging houses in Manhattan, all five surrounding boroughs, New Jersey, and Albany. The sites are also not limited to lodging houses - we also have a host of affiliated sites that range from businesses to gangs. All Union websites function in the following manner: Members join the website by creating a character that either lives at that location (if it's a lodging house), or works there (if it's a business). They then write stories involving their character, as well as the other members of the website, and engage in live role playing in the website's chat room. The ultimate goal is to generate stories, create developed characters, and hopefully have fun and make friends in the process.
