The biggest Hollywood winner from 2018, at the ticket booth and awards stage combined, is … Spandex. On Sunday evening, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was named best animated feature at the 24th Critics’ Choice Awards, and best-picture nominee “Black Panther” scored a trifecta, winning for production design, costume design and visual effects — helping to build momentum for both Oscars hopefuls starring costumed heroes. On the same weekend, “Aquaman” crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide a month after release — becoming the first film in DC Comics’ expanded universe, and the fourth superhero movie from last year, to hit that milestone. Those January achievements are simply a capstone on a banner year for superheroes on the big screen.
