Without changing the meaning you can use "on" instead of "at" and you find that "on weekends" is much more often used than any other in AmE: ngram. This is not so in BrE: ngram

    I will do my work over the weekend. I will do my work during the weekend. Neither "in the weekend" nor "at the weekend" sound correct. "On the weekend" sounds OK, more so if you're talking about multiple weekends. I do my work on weekends.

    As has been pointed out several times on this site, Her Majesty and her subjects never do things "ON" the weekend. They do things "on" Saturday, and "on" Sunday, but NEVER "on" the weekend. They do things AT the weekend and OVER the weekend (seldom "during" the weekend). –
