By Ryan Quinn Although the Mountain State has among the nation's highest immunization rates for school-entry-age children, at 97 percent, state health officials say West Virginia's rate for kids 19-35 months old is the lowest in the country. Dr. Rahul Gupta, state health officer and commissioner of the Bureau for Public Health, said only 63 percent of West Virginia children in that range are up to date on all the national Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices-recommended vaccines for diseases like hepatitis B and polio. Karen Bowling, Cabinet secretary of the state Department of Health and Human Resources, which includes the public health bureau, said the national rate is 71 percent.
