NEW YORK — The first U. S. bird flu death has been reported — a person in Louisiana who had been hospitalized with severe respiratory symptoms.
Louisiana health officials announced the death on Monday.
Health officials have said the person was older than 65, had underlying medical problems and had been in contact with sick and dead birds in a backyard flock.
A proposal by federal agencies that could have severely limited the use of fixed climbing anchors in wilderness areas is now dead, following adoption of legislation signed into law by President Biden last weekend.
Among the provisions in the wide-ranging EXPLORE Act (an acronym for “Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences”) were protections for rock climbers who use fixed anchors for safety.

The license plates were approved through a 2024 bill sponsored by Denver Democrats Rep.
A new 20-story apartment building is planned for the Globeville neighborhood near Denver’s emerging Fox Park neighborhood, according to plans submitted early last month to the city by Architectural Workshop, a Denver-based architecture, design and planning group.
The project, West 39th Avenue and 3901 Elati St., will feature an approximately 125,000-square-foot parking garage with a total of 323 parking spaces, 417 units ranging from studio, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments and nearly 20,000 square feet of amenity space dispersed throughout the building.
Though the property is still in the concept phase, residents can expect amenities such as community areas, a fitness center and an elevated park on the seventh floor, according to Isiah Salazar, president at Central Street Capital, Inc., a private investment management company based in Denver that is working on the development.
“We’re very excited about the potential of this project,” Salazar said.
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President-elect Donald Trump is promising to replace the head of the National Archives, thrusting the agency back into the political spotlight after his mishandling of sensitive documents led to a federal indictment.
“We will have a new archivist,” Trump told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Monday.
The agency piqued Trump’s ire after it alerted the Department of Justice about potential problems with Trump’s handling of classified documents in early 2022.
