MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa — or, better yet, $212 million quarterback Tua Tagovailoa — appeared relieved and grateful Sunday when he made his first comments since agreeing to his lucrative contract extension Friday and officially signing the deal Sunday morning. But he’s also eager to deliver for the Dolphins and assure the team it made a worthwhile investment in him. Tagovailoa, in the past two years since coach Mike McDaniel and wide receiver Tyreek Hill arrived in Miami, has led the NFL in quarterback rating and yards per pass attempt in 2022 and then led the league in total passing yards in 2023. That, combined with making it through his first full season healthy last year, made it so that he could lock in his long-term future with the Dolphins before playing on the fifth-year option of his rookie deal this fall. But now, it’s about accomplishing what he hasn’t yet. “We haven’t won the games that we’ve wanted to win,” said Tagovailoa, speaking Sunday afternoon after the fourth Dolphins training camp practice, surrounded by family and Dolphins coaches and executives.

Miami Dolphins running back Jeff Wilson Jr., an always-smiling, highly-energetic type whose running style is marked by his high-knee action and slashing cuts, wore the orange jersey during Sunday’s practice. MIAMI GARDENS — It was the first training camp practice open to fans, and first one for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa since signing his big contract extension. You’d think that meant Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel was going to let Tagovailoa air it out for a fireworks display, but it was actually a run-heavy day of work. That much was fitting on a sweltering Sunday morning in which running back Jeff Wilson Jr.

Team USA began play at the Paris Olympics with a Heat-vs.-Heat matchup. Not only was Bam Adebayo in action in Team USA’s 110-84 victory to open pool play, but some of his action came against Heat teammate Nikola Jovic, who made it back into Serbia’s rotation after suffering an ankle sprain during Heat workouts last month at Kaseya Center. Adebayo played 19:52 of the 40-minute game, closing with four points on 2-of-6 shooting, with two rebounds and two assists. Jovic played 13:35, closing with five points on 1-of-6 shooting, with two rebounds and an assist. Jovic converted an early 3-pointer for the only first-half points by either of the Heat big men. The last time Adebayo and Jovic played in the same game was when the Heat fell in Game 5 of the first-round of the NBA playoffs against the Boston Celtics on May 2 at TD Garden.
