'Waiting for Lightning' review: Danny Way "Waiting for Lightning," a documentary about legendary skateboarder Danny Way that opens at the Metreon and is available on demand, is epic in scope - it covers three decades, deals with tragedy, emphasizes struggle and perseverance, and is capped with a fantastic jump over the Great Wall in China. Director Jacob Rosenberg's reverential treatment of his subject doesn't transcend in the way that "Exit Through the Gift Shop" transcends graffiti artists. Rosenberg does a good job of showing how Way's life could have gone in a dramatically different direction but for a survival instinct and an urge to push himself that he shares with fellow extreme sports stars, including surfer Laird Hamilton and daredevil Travis Pastrana, both interviewed in the film.
