In an effort to reduce its massive backlog of disability determination appeals, the Social Security Administration plans to reinstate an additional step in the disability appeals process for 10 states, including Pennsylvania. Social Security Administration officials say the extra step "reconsideration" - which is a second review of an initial rejected claim for federal disability payments - would create a uniform system since 40 other states already have to go through a reconsideration on first appeal.
