Two crane companies could have prevented a piece of a crane from falling and a worker from plummeting to his death in downtown Fort Lauderdale in April, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. But they failed to notice “significantly corroded” and improperly tightened parts. OSHA has cited both companies, Phoenix Rigging & Erecting and Maxim Crane Works, and suggested a total of $61,299 in penalties, the maximum possible amount. “Neglecting workplace safety requirements can be a matter of life or death,” OSHA Fort Lauderdale Area Director Condell Eastmond said in statement Tuesday.
