Trim Tree "suckers" In Late Spring To Avoid Having To Do It Twice

Q: I have a couple of crabapples in my yard. They have always had shoots growing right next to the trunk and if I don't cut them off, it looks like a shrub with a tree in the middle. I guess these are suckers. I have to prune them off early each spring and several more times during the growing season.
