Even with hazy skies and scattered showers, residents spent the day outside learning, volunteering and celebrating Earth Day. Redding’s Rid Litter Day took place Saturday on the Town Green, where volunteers were given vests, gloves and trash bags to pick up litter on designated town roads and facilities. The Lion’s Club led a “lose the litter” event around the streets of Newtown as the first part of an all-day Earth Day Festival, complete with a birds of prey exhibit, a silent auction, live music and kids activities. Part of the festival’s proceeds will fund a “green” scholarship through the Newtown Scholarship Association, for students interested in studying environmental or ecological studies. From lots activities for kids, to live music and tasty food, it is a memorable day for the whole community and brings lots of smiles.
