Public invited to Stomp Out Violence march and rally May 28 in Pontiac

"Violence prevention starts with everyday heroes life you."That's the message calling people to the 8th annual Stomp Out Violence March and Rally, to be held May 28, 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in Pontiac's Rotary Park. Organized by the nonprofit Identify Your Dreams Corporation, the free event is open to the public and will offer food, entertainment and activities for kids.

 

Worker killed when run over by truck in South Lyon

One man is dead in a traffic accident, and South Lyon police are asking motorists to avoid the area of Pontiac Trail and 11 Mile Road. A man who works for Ajax Paving out of Troy has been run over and killed by an asphalt truck, which is based out of Warren's Piper Trucking. The accident occurred at Pontiac Trail and Eleven Mile Road, prompting the shut down of the road as the investigation commences.

 

Vernest Griffin, charged in murderous shooting spree, found competent

A Sterling Heights man who authorities believe went on a workplace shooting spree in two counties has been found competent to face charges in the killing of Eriberto "Eddie" Perez of Waterford, shot to death Feb.

 

House of Bedrooms closing both Bloomfield Hills stores

House of Bedrooms, a retailer of bedroom furniture and handmade Oriental rugs, announced it is closing its two stores, after more than 50 years in business. The business was founded by Robert and Norma Goldman, who opened their first location in September of 1960 in Bloomfield Hills. The couple's sons joined the business, and in 1997, the family opened a new 20,000-square-foot showroom devoted to master bedroom furniture next door to the original 16,400-square-foot location.

 

Lake Orion Vietnam War veteran to be honored for service

Kenneth Smith, a Vietnam War veteran, will be recognized as the 2018 Lake Orion American Legion Post 233/Lake Orion Police Department Honored Veteran. Smith served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1970. As the honored veteran, he will ride in the lead police vehicle at the head of the Lake Orion Memorial Day Parade and his biography will be read to the parade crowd at a brief ceremony during the parade.

 

Click It or Ticket campaign underway

A statewide effort by law enforcement is underway to promote seatbelt use.The Click It or Ticket campaign, running May 21 through June 3, has law enforcement from police departments and sheriff's offices, along with the Michigan State Police conducting stepped up seatbelt enforcement throughout Michigan.

 

State Rep. Howrylak recognizes parents' 50th anniversary on House floor

State Rep. Martin Howrylak, R-Troy, recently introduced his parents on the House floor in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary, presenting them with a special tribute.Frank and Yvonne Howrylak, of Troy, were married on February 24, 1968.Their son represents Troy and Clawson in the state House.

 

Gubernatorial candidate Shri Thanedar names campaign manager

Michigan Democratic gubernatorial candidate Shri Thanedar has announced the appointment of David Bullock as his campaign manager. According to Thanedar, Bullock brings extensive organizing knowledge to his campaign from working as Michigan state coordinator for the Rainbow PUSH coalition where he led the successful fight against Michigan Public Act 4.

 

No mercury detected in water at Van Hoosen Middle School, Rochester Adams High School

School will resume Wednesday, May 23 at Van Hoosen Middle School and Rochester Adams High School after laboratory testing detected no mercury in water test samples taken from the schools.The testing was done in response to a concern about water quality at Van Hoosen Middle School.

 

Public meeting to be held Tuesday on Troy, Bloomfield, Rochester Hills construction projects

The Road Commission for Oakland County will hold a public meeting Tuesday, May 22, on upcoming construction projects in Troy and Bloomfield Township.The meeting will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Deerfield Elementary School, 3600 Crooks Road in Rochester Hills.
