Court denies Kountze ISD's Bible sign appeal

The Ninth Court of Appeals has turned down an appeal from the Kountze Independent School District to reconsider a ruling allowing cheerleaders to make religious banners.
The decision affirms the court's ruling last month in favor of the squad.
Parents of seven Kountze ISD cheerleaders sued the district in 2012 after the district, in response to a letter from the Freedom From Religion Foundation, banned the squad from putting Bible verses on signs at football games.

 

Former Texas nurse faces 5th murder charge in a child death

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A former nurse who prosecutors believe could be responsible for the deaths of up to 60 Texas children has been indicted on a murder charge for the fifth time this year. Bexar (bayr) County District Attorney Nico LaHood says a grand jury indicted Genene Jones on a murder charge Tuesday in the 1981 death of a 3-month-old. The 67-year-old Jones already is in state prison for the 1982 killing of a toddler and the sickening of a 4-week-old boy who survived. She was scheduled for release in March.

 

6 dead, others hurt after motorist drives onto NY bike path

NEW YORK (AP) — A man in a rented truck drove onto a busy bicycle path near the World Trade Center memorial Tuesday, killing at least six people and injuring several others, police said. The driver was then shot by police after jumping out with what turned out to be two fake guns. A police official said the attack was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation and spoke on condition of anonymity. The attacker was taken into custody. His condition was not immediately disclosed.

 

BISD appproves 'innovation' process, $3.2 million to TEA

aBeaumont ISD's administration and board of managers on Monday agreed to seek a state designation that allows them to opt out of certain requirements, saying they want to make limited changes.
"My motivation for this is the school calendar," Superintendent John Frossard said. By state law, the district can't start classes before the fourth Monday in August, but Districts of Innovation can opt to start earlier, which many did, some starting as early as the second Monday in August.

 

FEMA extends Harvey hotel assistance

Harvey victims staying in hotels with FEMA assistance can stay until Nov. 26, the agency announced Monday.
