Newtown police seek shrimp thief

The man was seen on surveillance camera Saturday morning loading dozens of shrimp packages into reusable bags at Stop & Shop, 228 S. Main St., police said.

Police said he was wearing a New York Yankees hat, a black shirt, shorts and black shoes.

 

Small plane crash lands at Danbury airport

DANBURY — A pilot overcompensated while landing his small plane shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, scraping the plane nose on the runway, an airport official said.

The pilot, who was not identified, was able to walk away with minor injuries.

Michael Safranek, the assistant airport administrator, said the man was the only person in the plane. There are no other injuries reported.

The airport is closed while the accident investigation continues.

Details on the accident were not immediately available.

 

Mother charged after dispute at police station

Heather Kay, 48, arrived at the Main Street police headquarters about 7 p.m. to bail her teenage daughter out of jail after a shoplifiting arrest, according to the report.

When officers arrived, the woman told them that her ex-husband’s mother spat on her face and assaulted her — a statement police said they learned was false after reviewing footage from the security camera in the parking lot.

 

Suspects nabbed after Bethel burglary

When the residents arrived home about 6:30 p.m., they found damage to a door and heard voices inside the house, police said.

Upon hearing the residents, the two burglars fled the house, leading to an extensive search of the surrounding area by Bethel police as well as K-9 units and officers from Redding, Brookfield and Newtown, according to the report.

 

Ridgefield police warn drivers after theft from unlocked cars

RIDGEFIELD — Police are urging residents to lock up their cars after a recent rash of thefts from vehicles in the Main Street area.

In each case reported over the past week, the car was left unlocked and no forced entry was reported, police said.

Authorities believe all incidents happened during the overnight hours.

Police are also asking residents not to leave any valuable items in their cars.

Anyone with information regarding the recent thefts is asked to call Ridgefield police at 203-438-6531.

 

Bethel PD seeks public comment on accreditation

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agency will visit the department to assess its policies, management, operation and support services.

The voluntary accreditation is a highly-regarded recognition given to select police departments for law enforcement excellence.

 

Police: Danbury motorcyclist arrested after near-miss with cruiser

A state trooper was pulling over a car near Exit 2 on eastbound I-84 when he heard tires squealing and saw a motorcycle traveling high speed up the right shoulder right behind his cruiser, according to the report.

Morales, 20, of Avalon Lake Road, was charged with reckless driving, illegal operation of a motorcycle without a license and operating a vehicle with a suspended license.

 

Southbury dentist charged with Medicaid fraud

Thomas Derienzo, 58, of Bucks Hill Road, was charged Tuesday with one count each of first-degree larceny by defrauding a public community, second-degree vendor fraud and insurance fraud.

In 282 instances, the claimed services were either not rendered at all or were “upcoded,” meaning they were assigned an incorrect billing code in order to increase the allowable payment, authorities said in a news release.

Cops: New Milford driver nearly hit troopers during chase

Troopers from the Somers barracks activated their cruisers’ emergency lights and sirens when they saw a Nissan Altima traveling at more than 80 mph, according to the report.

The driver, 31-year-old Daquan Smith, refused to stop and almost struck two troopers who were on a separate traffic stop, police said.
