For decades, Bald Knob Marina on the Fox River – a popular inland waterway in the region – has been the central hub for boaters in Johnsburg and the surrounding area.

Even for nonboaters, its presence has shaped the traditions of many in the area, said Susan Eckdahl, a former Bald Knob employee who worked there for 20 years.

 

Another round of snow could dump up to 6 inches in western McHenry, Kane counties, meteorologists say

The Friday evening commute from work usually is a time for celebration, but maybe not this week thanks to another round of snow that could dump six inches in portions of the McHenry County region.

Snow on Thursday draped like a layer of frosting over trees, cars and children’s toys left outside after the first phase of snow began falling Wednesday evening. But much more snow is in the forecast, according to models from the National Weather Service.

Meteorologist Jake Petr said 0.8 inches fell on Woodstock by 8 a.m.

 

Huntley Village Board rejects recreational marijuana use, OKs medical use dispensaries

The Huntley Village Board unanimously voted to prohibit recreational marijuana businesses from operating within the village on Tuesday.

In November, the Huntley Plan Commission recommended for board consideration a series of text amendments to the village’s zoning ordinance that would regulate recreational marijuana retailers.

Under the proposed ordinance, no more than one adult-use marijuana dispensary would have been permitted to operate within the village at any given time.

 

Coroner: Algonquin woman killed in Lake Barrington crash identified

The Lake County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the Algonquin woman who died in a Lake Barrington car crash as 30-year-old Angela Parisi.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate she died of multiple blunt-force injuries caused by the car crash, according to Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper. Toxicology results are pending.

“We have been in close contact with Ms. Parisi’s family and our deepest condolences go out to them during this difficult time.

 

Portraits of Obamas to begin 5-city U.S. tour in Chicago

CHICAGO – The official portraits of former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama from the National Portrait Gallery will begin a five-city national tour in Chicago in June 2021.

The Art Institute of Chicago will host the portraits from June 18, 2021, to Aug. 15, 2021, the gallery announced Thursday.

Kehinde Wiley’s portrait of Barack Obama and Amy Sherald’s portrait of Michelle Obama were unveiled in February 2018.

 

Algonquin woman who died in Lake Barrington crash identified

The Lake County Coroner's Office on Thursday identified the Algonquin woman who died in a Lake Barrington car crash as 30-year-old Angela Parisi.

The crash that killed Parisi happened at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday.

 

Dog rescued from Huntley house fire, family uninjured

No one was injured but a dog was saved after a fire broke out on Wednesday evening in a single-family home in Huntley.

Huntley firefighters responded to the fire at around 6:04 p.m. Wednesday. Battalion Chief David Eeg of the Huntley Fire Protection District said they believe the fire started in a clothes dryer on the second floor of the home at 10538 Fleetwood St.

The three children and two adults living in the home were present at the time of the fire, but nobody was injured, Eeg said.

 

Jury acquits McHenry man of child sex abuse charges

A McHenry man was acquitted on Thursday of child sexual abuse charges after he was accused of inappropriately touching an underage female relative in 2017.

After about 3 1/2 hours of deliberation, jurors on Thursday afternoon found 60-year James Barnard guilty of two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery, a probationable offense typically punishable by less than one year in jail. Jurors also returned not guilty verdicts for three additional counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

 

9 parents separated from families return to children in U.S.

LOS ANGELES – As his long-lost son walked toward him in an airport terminal, a sobbing David Xol stretched out his arms, fell to one knee and embraced the boy for about three minutes, crying into his shoulder.

He had not held the child since May 2018, when border agents pulled then-7-year-old Byron away inside a detention facility.
