Lois Alexander, 88, of the Horse Creek Community, passed away Monday, August 26, 2019 at her home.
Mrs. Alexander was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Pleasant Hill UM Church. She was retired from Magnavox after 42 years of service.

KINGSPORT — Kingsport’s Miracle Field project just got a financial “boost” from one of our region’s long-time community supporters.
Food City announced on Tuesday the company is teaming up with Visit Kingsport and the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce to raise funds for the Miracle Field project.
A Miracle Field is a baseball field built to accommodate special needs children. Kingsport plans to build the field, along with a pavilion and all-accessible playground, at Brickyard Park.

One of my favorite shows on television is “Blue Bloods.” I love it because of the way they portray their love of family. I love it for their continuously positive work ethic and love of what’s right and just. I love it for the positive role models they portray and their wholesome Catholic values. However, the main reason I love it is for Tom Selleck’s ability to slather butter on a roll at the family dinner table like nobody else can.
I choose to believe that Frank Reagan sits down to Sunday dinner without caring one bit about counting carbs.

PENNINGTON GAP — Ecotourism may only be one of many answers to boosting Southwest Virginia’s economy, but it deserves effort.
That was the message from a discussion panel at the Pennington Gap Community Center on Tuesday, hosted by citizens’ group New Economy Network and community organization Appalachian Voices.
About 25 area residents heard panel members discuss what they see as opportunities and challenges that local governments, tourism entrepreneurs and Southwest Virginia face in planning, developing and marketing attractions based on natural resources in the region.

For Southwest Virginia football, there are no more benefit games, no more jamborees, no more weight room workouts, no more 7-on-7 drills, no more scrimmages.
The season is upon us and excitement is high.
Several camps in the region harbor a lot of expectations going into the season’s kickoff Thursday when Ridgeview travels to Norton to face J.I. Burton ahead of a full slate of contests scheduled on Friday.

Nov. 8 is the 11th and final week of the regular season. While that seems like a long way away, it will be here quickly once the teams get underway.

Jacqueline Meade nee Slaughter, Mom, Nana, Aunt Jackie, passed away peacefully at Raintree Terrace Assisted Living Facility where she had been a resident for 2 years.
Thankfully and with grace, she died during her afternoon nap on Monday, August 26th after a long but courageous battle with Lewy Body Syndrome (dementia) and Parkinson's disease. She was 91 years old.
Born and raised in Kingsport, TN, and after many moves including VA Beach and Nashville, she had resided in Knoxville, TN for more than 35 years.
Nana was wonderfully devoted to her three children, Beau, Bunny, and Gina.

GATE CITY, VA - Carl W. Newman, age 99 3/4, of Gate City, VA went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at his residence following  a period of declining health.

Jolene Hubbard Townsend passed away in the hands of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, August 27, 2019. 
She was born on April 6, 1939 in Sullivan County, TN and resided in Fairfax County VA for 37 years.  Jolene was a graduate of Sullivan High School and retired from the DMV in Virginia.  She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kent and Madeline Hubbard, and niece, Brenda Smith.

GREENEVILLE  — Dawn Bridwell, an education professional with thorough knowledge of student recruitment and enrollment, has been named assistant vice president of admissions at Tusculum University.
Bridwell will oversee daily operations of all recruitment efforts and manage admission and processing. She will hire recruitment staff, direct targeted recruitment campaigns and manage the budget. Bridwell will also assist with recruitment trips to high schools and community colleges and build even stronger lasting relationships with leaders there.
