1st Amendment cited in BLM wild horse fight

RENO, Nev. — The Reporters Committee on Freedom of the Press says the U. S. Bureau of Land Management is using safety concerns as an excuse to limit media access to wild horse roundups across the West in violation of the First Amendment.The National Press Photographers Association and more than a dozen newspaper companies joined the committee in a friend-of-the-court brief filed in the 9th Circuit U.S.

 

Fundraiser kicks off Thursday

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon will kick off its annual “It Just Takes One" campaign with a fundraising luncheon at noon Thursday.The event will take place at the downtown Bend club, 500 N. W. Wall St.

 

La Pine gas station’s owner fined by DEQ

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is fining a company that owned a La Pine gas station, saying the company was late in filing an annual report.Fred Morrow Inc. is being fined $3,300, according to the DEQ. The gas station is at the La Pine Mini Mart at 52530 U. S. Highway 97. The company is required to file a report by Feb. 15 each year, but DEQ officials say it didn’t until late August this year.

John Kitzhaber will call the Oregon Legislature into special session Sept. 30 to act on a framework agreed to today that boosts school funding and reduces the public pension system liability.Kitzhaber met a third day with leaders from both parties before reaching a prospective agreement that covers increased funding for public schools, mental health programs, senior citizens and others.

 

Galveston bridge back in business

Closed since early September because of construction to make the area more pedestrian- and bike-friendly, the Galveston Street bridge and intersection of Riverside Boulevard and Tumalo Avenue partially reopened to traffic on Tuesday.

A jury was selected Tuesday in the murder trial of 86-year-old Lawrence Loeffler, who stands accused of killing his wife at their south county home in January.After more than three hours of questioning, prosecutors and defense attorneys chose eight women and four men to sit on the jury, with a man and woman serving as alternates.
