Stagecoach Fire 70 percent contained

The Bureau of Land Management is currently wrapping up the Stagecoach Fire, which started Monday south of La Pine. The fire did not grow Thursday and is now 70 percent contained, said BLM spokeswoman Lisa Clark. It was about 330 acres.Firefighting forces were downgraded from 157 to 125 firefighters Thursday evening. Clark expects the fire to be 100 percent contained by 6 p.m.

 

Forest Service plans to issue permit for Bridge Creek project

The U. S. Forest Service announced today that it plans to issue a permit for the city of Bend to build a new $24 million water intake facility and pipeline in the Cascades foothills. The project will replace existing infrastructure that carries water from Bridge Creek to the city.The Forest Service had issued the city a permit for the project last year, but the city dropped that version of the project after opponents sued in federal court to stop it.

Factory accident kills 1 worker

A Redmond man was killed Wednesday morning when a metal press weighing roughly 1,500 pounds fell on him at a Prineville wood products factory.Fontana Wood Products employee Joshua Lee Ketchem, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene.According to Sgt. James Savage of the Crook County Sheriff’s Office, Ketchem was dismantling the press, used to assemble roof trusses, as it rested on a forklift above him.
