Smoky haze dampens Bend air quality

Smoke hung thick in the air this morning around Bend, to a level deemed by the state as unhealthy for sensitive groups.While there were no prescribed burns on the Deschutes National Forest, firefighters today were burning piles of thinned wood south of town near Crescent, said Lauren Miller, fire and fuels planner for the forest.

Two ballots tip Culver scales

It’s not final, but the Culver School District’s long odyssey to fund what it considers essential upgrades appears to be over.Ballot counting on the $8.8 million bond stalled on election night with 588 “yes" votes cast against 585 “no" votes. The Jefferson County Clerk’s Office later identified four ballots that had either been dropped off with Deschutes County elections officials or had flawed or missing signatures.

 

Benefit slated for Philippines

Members of the Filipino-American Association of the High Desert plan a fundraising dinner this weekend to benefit Typhoon Haiyan victims.Dinner will be served 6-9 p. m. Saturday at Bend’s Community Center at 1036 N. E. Fifth St.Organizers are accepting monetary and in-kind donations for the relief effort.

 

Cascade Bancorp reports a profit

The parent company of Bank of the Cascades increased its assets and lending activity in the third quarter of the year, according to its quarterly financial report, released Tuesday.Cascade Bancorp posted net income of $1.49 million for the quarter ending Sept. 30.

 

Bratton says Bend home prices down

The median single-family home price fell last month in Bend and stayed the same in Redmond, according to figures released Tuesday by the Bratton Appraisal Group.Bend’s median price dropped to $256,000 in October, from $298,000 in September, the report shows.

Drug charges net man 11 years

A federal judge Tuesday sentenced a man arrested in May by Redmond Police to more than 11 years in prison for drug offenses, according to the U. S. Attorney for Oregon.Matthew Collins pleaded guilty Aug. 1 in U. S. District Court in Eugene to possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, according to spokeswoman Gerri Badden of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. U.S.

U. S. Army Private Michael Carter has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S. C. He is a 2012 graduate of Crook County High School and the son of William Wine, of Prineville.Air Force Airman Chad Vancleave has graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas.

 

iPads at Buckingham Elementary; Video: Students and faculty react to new iPads

Students from Buckingham Elementary got something in return for spending their Tuesday evening at school — a new iPad.Students in third through fifth grades received the devices as part of Bend-La Pine Schools' digital conversion pilot program. Students will have their own iPads, which they will be able to use in the classroom and at home.
