The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for Central Oregon, meaning conditions are right for thunder, lightning and new wildfires.The warning goes into effect today at 11 a. m. and lasts until 11 p. m. Sunday, according to the Weather Service.

 

Biedscheid out of county jail

A Bend driver convicted for fleeing the scene when he struck and killed a man pushing a bicycle across Third Street was released from the Deschutes County Jail on Monday.Bret Biedscheid, 40, was booked into jail June 12, one day after he was convicted on a charge of failure to perform the duties of a driver.

Water truck driver dies in crash at wildfire in southwest Oregon

PORTLAND — The death of a 19-year-old water truck driver outside a rural Oregon wildfire came just months after he joined a community college firefighter training program and readied for his first fire season.Jesse Trader had a baseball scholarship to Western Oregon University but chose to enroll at Chemeketa Community College for its fire protection program instead, his mother said Tuesday.

Crews fighting Green Ridge Fire

More than 450 firefighters continue to fight the Green Ridge Fire near Camp Sherman, which had burned 450 acres and was 30 percent contained as of Monday night.Firefighters expect to have the fire, which was started by lightning Wednesday night, contained by Saturday, said Lisa Clark, spokeswoman for the Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center in Prineville.

 

Expansion begins at Meissner

The Deschutes National Forest this week is starting the expansion of the Virginia Meissner Sno-park, causing the temporary closure of the park.The parking lot is set to go from 120 spots to 180, according to the U. S. Forest Service.

 

Fire claims La Pine home

A single-family home in La Pine is a total loss following a Sunday fire, according to Mike Supkis with the La Pine Rural Fire Protection District.Fire crews were dispatched to the 52000 block of Shady Lane at approximately 5:14 p. m. Sunday. Firefighters from LPRFD and the Department of Forestry arrived within 10 minutes of the 911 call.

The Bend Spay and Neuter Project received a $7,500 grant from the Humane Society of the United States to provide free prevention and care services for 100 pit bull-type dogs in Central Oregon.Free services include spay and neuter procedures, Deschutes County licenses and rabies vaccinations. Any Central Oregon pit bull owner is eligible to take advantage of the grant by making an appointment with Bend Spay and Neuter.
