Two expected to recover after contracting Legionella at VA home in Amarillo

Two people acquired Legionella while living at the Ussery Roan Veterans Home at the end of August, according to Brittany Eck, Press Secretary for the Texas General Land Office, the agency that oversees the operation of eight VA homes in Texas.
One person is being treated for Legionella at the home while the other is a patient at the Amarillo VA Hospital, officials confirmed.

 

Bakers create lifetime of memories through annual culinary contests

Lila Casler arrived at the Amarillo Tri-State Fairgrounds on Friday morning bearing tubs of homemade cookies for the annual Tri-State Fair & Rodeo Open Culinary competition.
The 91-year-old is a veteran of the competition, whose treats went straight from the oven into the hands of her five children before some eventually landed in front of the judges, going on to win blue ribbons.
But the 1942 Amarillo High School graduate said this one will be her final contest.

 

Questions linger after fed drug raids in Amarillo this week

Federal raids across Amarillo Tuesday left the city wondering what could have motivated the Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Amarillo Police Department’s SWAT Team, and special agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety to descend upon an automobile repair garage and a residential location, detaining suspects and gathering evidence.

CHICAGO (AP) — The mother of Sandra Bland, a black woman who died last summer in a Texas jail after a contentious traffic stop, has reached a $1.9 million settlement in her wrongful-death lawsuit, her attorney said Thursday.

Infant injured in shooting in Amarillo this morning

An infant who was asleep was struck by a gunshot early this morning and is being treated for serious injuries.
According to Amarillo police, the owner and his family of P.D. Smoke Shop, 2714 S.W. 34th Ave., were asleep in the back of the store when someone fired a gunshot through a window on the back of the building.
The incident was reported at 6:24 a.m. today.
A bullet struck a sleeping infant. The infant was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to a news release.

 

Reported sexual assault at WT residence hall being investigated

Canyon authorities are investigating a reported sexual assault at a West Texas A&M University residence hall.
The University Police Department on Wednesday became aware of an incident involving two university students, according to a crime alert posted on the WT website,
The person who reported the assault said a female student was sexually assaulted late Tuesday evening by a male student in his room in a WT residence hall, the alert read.
The victim and the alleged assailant were reportedly known to each other but were not in a dating relationship.

 

Police arrest man after shooting near Plainview school

PLAINVIEW — Plainview police say they’ve arrested a man in connection with a shooting early Wednesday morning that prompted Coronado Middle School in Plainview to have a two-hour delayed start.
Police Wednesday afternoon identified the suspect after he turned himself in as Mark Dewayne Hallcy, age 43, of Plainview. He was placed in custody at the Hale County Sheriff’s Department with charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

 

Amarillo ISD schools among top performers

Two Amarillo elementary schools have been recognized as top performers in their peer group by the Texas Education Agency.
San Jacinto Elementary School and South Lawn Elementary School, both in the Amarillo Independent School District, were among more than 400 campuses statewide that met the standard in the 2016 state accountability ratings while also earning all possible distinctions, the TEA announced Wednesday.

 

Amarillo teacher under investigation commits suicide

An Amarillo Independent School District teacher under criminal investigation for possible inappropriate relationships with students has committed suicide, according to a school letter sent to parents Wednesday.
The teacher was identified as 50-year-old Tim Mohler. He was a sixth-grade social studies teacher at Fannin Middle School.
