Huntsville police blotter: Guns and scrap metal stolen

Unless otherwise noted, Huntsville police reported the following incidents Thursday. In items with incomplete addresses, police withheld the information.

 

Today's north Alabama weather: High near 68, night showers possible

Look for mostly sun outside and highs in the upper 60s as high pressure to the south moves into the region. These temperatures are more than 10 degrees below the seasonal norm. A few west winds between 5 and 15 mph could also crop up.

 

Bomb threat made to Huntsville Wendy's restaurant

Officers responded at about 6 p.m., according to the police report. Police say nothing suspicious was found. No other details were immediately available, but the investigation is ongoing.

 

United Way of Madison County honors biggest charity campaigns of 2013

Campaign director Fariba Tabarrok explained that companies across the county engage in internal fundraising campaigns each year. These allow the United Way to enter these workplaces so the employees may have the opportunity to "invest in their local community." Employees may choose to donate to these causes, often through payroll deduction.

 

Flags flown at half-staff Thursday in remembrance of fallen peace officers

Thursday is National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Cities and law enforcement jurisdictions across the country have set up individual modes of observance. Confessed hit man in Lawrence County Jail wants murder trial delayed

Jose Manuel Martinez is currently scheduled to begin trial on June 16 in the March 2013 shooting death of Jose Arturo Ruiz in Lawrence County, to which he has pleaded not guilty. Martinez's attorneys field papers Wednesday asking for a continuance. The Lawrence County clerk's office did not know the trial date his attorneys are seeking.
