Map JFK used during Cuban Missile Crisis sold at auction

BOSTON — A map of Cuba that President John F. Kennedy referred to during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 has sold at auction for nearly $140,000.The map that Kennedy called his "victory map " was sold by Boston-based RR Auction during an auction that ended Wednesday.The map shows the position of every Soviet missile, bomber and fighter jet, and nuclear storage facility in Cuba as of noon, October 27, 1962, and includes the nine targets that American planes would have bombed had Kennedy ordered air strikes on the island.

Officials destroy unexploded shells found in Cape Cod Bay

ORLEANS, Mass. — The Massachusetts bomb squad and U.S. Navy officials have destroyed a pair of decades-old unexploded shells that were dredged up by a fishing boat.The shells, one about 6 feet long and the other 8 inches long, were exploded on an Orleans beach on Wednesday.Police say the fishing boat brought the shells to shore in its net around 10:30 a.m.

 

Boston police make arrest in fatal stabbing outside arena

BOSTON — Boston police have arrested a man they say is responsible for a fatal stabbing this week near the TD Garden sports arena.Police say 55-year-old Mark Love faces arraignment Thursday on a murder charge in connection with the stabbing at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday just outside a federal building next to the arena.The victim was identified Thursday as 53-year-old Darryl Noles, of Medford.The stabbing occurred just as concert by singer Pink at the Garden was ending, but police do not think the death was connected to the show.

 

Bombing memorials finally funded

The memorials for the Boston Marathon bombing victims — which were supposed to be unveiled this weekend — are now fully funded and should be complete by this fall, but the artist is holding back images of their design.“The families wish to keep this tight for as long as we can,” artist Pablo Eduardo told the Herald yesterday. “It’s a very emotional thing for them to lend us their tragedy, we have to respect that.”

 

Man arraigned in Causeway Street stabbing

A man accused of fatally stabbing a man on Causeway Street on Tuesday night was ordered held without bail yesterday after pleading not guilty at his arraignment in Boston Municipal Court.Mark Love, 55, arrested Wednesday for the death of 53-year-old Darryl Noles of Medford, was identified by witnesses during a police investigation, according to court documents.One witness who reached out to detectives said Love was standing by a liquor store in the area on the night of the stabbing and confessed to stabbing “D Noles,” the name the victim was known by.

Eastie school will boost metal detector use after student’s gun arrest

East Boston High School will increase use of metal detectors following the arrest yesterday of a student allegedly carrying an illegal .22 caliber RG-14 revolver, according to Boston school and police officials.Keon Harris, 20, of Boston, was nabbed by Boston school police and Boston police officers after they found the handgun allegedly discarded by the suspect near Brooks Street in East Boston. Harris is being charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and will appear in East Boston District Court.

 

Gun rights backers planning rifle rally

Organizers are encouraging gun rights supporters to bring unloaded rifles to rallies at state capitols across the U.S. this weekend, pushing back against a wave of student-led gun violence protests that some see as a threat to the Second Amendment.A group called the National Constitutional Coalition of Patriotic Americans spread word of the gatherings on social media. Organizers have permits for rallies tomorrow outside 45 statehouses, said David Clayton of West Virginia, one of the coalition’s founders.
