New Heckscher Drive bridge set to open
A new $44.2 million high-rise bridge on Heckscher Drive over Sisters Creek is set to open to traffic Monday, ending more than two years of construction, according to the Florida Department of Transporatation.
The new bridge has two 12-foot travel lanes, 10-foot shoulders and six-foot sidewalks on both sides. It replaces a 1950s-era drawbridge and eliminates decades of highway traffic waiting for boats to pass under the bridge when it’s raised, state officials said.

Orange Park Skateboard Park expected to reopen late next month

ORANGE PARK | Officials expect Orange Park Skateboard Park to reopen as a modern concrete facility on Sept. 23 amid a grand celebration being planned for the only skate park in Clay County.
“There was some vandalism to the concrete, and it took a whole day to repair it. And some signs were stolen,” said Anjie Palmer, executive director of the nonprofit all-volunteer Orange Park Patrons, which operates the skate park owned by the Town of Orange Park.

 

Clay County volunteer group working to help community cat colonies

ORANGE PARK | An all-volunteer Clay County nonprofit is working to educate people about community cats — both free-roaming domestic and feral felines — and spread the word about the resources available in the county to help care for the animals such as a free spay-and-neuter program offered by Clay Humane for personal pets as well as homeless or feral cats.
