U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown’s attorneys asked a judge Thursday to let them quit representing her, just two days after they filed paperwork committing to handle her federal fraud trial.
“Irreconcilable differences exist and the relationship is strained where effective representation is compromised,” attorneys Mark NeJame and David Haas wrote in a filing to U.S. Magistrate James R. Klindt.

Former state Sen. Al Lawson and health-care advocate LaShonda “L.J.” Holloway both want to oust Brown, a 12-term incumbent facing federal fraud charges.

City money for Friends of Hemming Park clears another hurdle, set for final vote

A plan for City Hall to continue paying the nonprofit that manages downtown’s Hemming Park secured a crucial vote Wednesday and is now set for final approval by the Jacksonville City Council.
The council Finance Committee voted to pay Friends of Hemming Park $58,000 for the group to continue operating for the next two months. That money is now set for a final vote next Tuesday.

4th District Congressional candidates agree on key conservative principles at debate

The top four candidates squaring off in the Aug. 30 Republican primary for the 4th Congressional District spent most of a low-key debate Wednesday sharing broad agreement on a slate of conservative policy issues and making it clear there is little daylight between them and GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump.There was some sparring among the competitors, but for the most part the questions offered them little opportunity to mix it up.

Capt. Sean Patrick Haley, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate and executive officer of Jacksonville Naval Air Station, takes command of the base Thursday.
The largest Navy installation in the Southeast and the third largest in the service, the base includes 14 squadrons and employs thousands of sailors and civilians.
Haley takes command from retiring base commander Capt. Howard Wannamaker, who has held the post since February 2015.

Jacksonville's Crowley begins new shipping service to Costa Rica

Jacksonville-based Crowley Maritime Corp. is expanding its shipping service to Costa Rica.
In a prepared statement Wednesday, the company said its launching the new weekly container shipping service to Puerto Limon, Costa Rica. The ships will take cargo containers from JaxPort’s Talleyrand terminal every Thursday and will sail on to Port Everglades in South Florida before cruising to Costa Rica.

Teacher at Jacksonville's Biltmore Elementary dies unexpectedly in first week of school year

A fifth-grade teacher at Biltmore Elementary School in Jacksonville died Tuesday after she collapsed in front of students in a classroom, according to Duval County Public Schools.
Mildretta Chapple, 43, was an employee at the school for four years and had worked in the school district for 10 years, said schools spokeswoman Laureen Ricks. It was only the second day of classes.
