9/11 attacks: Memories for some, history lesson for others

Andrew Baker learned about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks for the first time in a middle school history class when he was 12 years old. The pictures and videos of smoke filling the sky above the rubble that was once the World Trade Center were so powerful that he knew it was more than just another history lesson.
He went home to his parents that day and asked them where they were when the terrorists attacked. The story he heard about their experience is burned into his memory.

 

Northeast Florida surfer dies in Nicaragua

A Northeast Florida surfer died following a surfing accident Thursday on the coast of Nicaragua, his parents confirmed on Facebook.
Devan Kennedy was found face down in the channel at Punta Miramar near Casa Sirena Surf Lodge. Kennedy died despite efforts to revive him by rescuers who pulled him from the water, reported Surfline, a Huntington Beach, Calif. company and website providing coverage of surfing and surf conditions worldwide.

Shade was scarce, the sun brutal and the humidity stifling. But impervious to it all, veterans from throughout Northeast Florida and beyond stood shoulder-to-shoulder with pride Saturday morning to honor fallen comrades, spouses, sons, daughters and friends at Jacksonville National Cemetery.

Orange Park council to hear proposals for improving pedestrian, bicycle paths

ORANGE PARK | Town Council on Sept. 20 is expected to receive a presentation summarizing the findings as well as recommendations resulting from a detailed study designed to make bicycling and walking safer, easier and more fun, therefore being more attractive in the Orange Park area.
No council action is anticipated other than to listen to the presentation, Assistant Town Manager Sarah Campbell said.

Butler and Southside boulevards face detours for FDOT improvements

More nighttime ramp closures and detours are scheduled Monday through Thursday to update lighting on the ramps on Butler and Southside boulevards, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.
Motorists going east on Butler to the northbound Southside exit from 11 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Monday through Tuesday will instead detour at the Gate Parkway exit, U-turn underneath and get back on westbound Butler to turn off on northbound Southside Boulevard.

 

St. Augustine man tackles California-bound rally on 105-year-old motorcycle

Norm Nelson has come in third and even second in the grueling Cannonball Motorcycle Endurance Run across America, both times on 1920s-vintage BMW motorcycles.
But as the St. Augustine man saddles up at 8:45 a.m. Saturday in Atlantic City, N.J., for his third Cannonball, he said he hopes his newest — and oldest iron steed — will bring him to Carlsbad, Calif., on Sept. 25 in first place.
