Cancer couldn't stop her -- but hearing loss takes a toll

Bobbi de Córdova-Hanks survived three types of cancer, but she says her latest setback is the hardest thing she’s ever had to fight.

“It’s very hard for me,” de Córdova-Hanks said. “I live to communicate.”
It’s not only that conversation is difficult. What many might not know about the founder of the breast cancer support group Bosom Buddies is that de Córdova-Hanks, 80, is an accomplished bass musician.

A legal fight between City Hall and the owners of The Jacksonville Landing over the disputed purchase of a nearby parking lot and unpaid property taxes could be headed for a jury trial after little recent movement on the case.

Man bitten by shark at Ponte Vedra Beach

A man suffered minor injuries when bitten by a shark at Ponte Vedra Beach about mid-afternoon Sunday.
The victim, who wasn’t identified, was bitten about 3:30 p.m. then taken to an emergency room for treatment, according to St. Johns Fire Rescue.
He told a couple on the beach that he had been wading in knee-deep water when he saw about a 3-to 4-foot shark, reported CBS 47/FOX 30 Action News Jacksonville.

Jacksonville homicide detectives investigate shooting in Arlington

Jacksonville homicide detectives were investigating a suspicious death in the 8100 block of Alderman Road at an Arlington apartment complex Sunday night.
The case involves a person who was shot, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, which tweeted out a news media advisory shortly after 6 p.m.

Driver, bicylist die in Jacksonville collision

A Jacksonville driver and bicyclist both died in a collision Saturday night in the 6600 block of Wilson Boulevard.
Michael F. Ciopryna, 75, of Jacksonville, was driving west when for an as-yet unknown reason his car drifted across two lanes and off the road where it hit 26-year-old bicyclist Ashley A. Nier, also of Jacksonville, about 9:35 p.m. Nier was riding east on the sidewalk when she was struck, according to Officer Melissa Bujeda, a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

 

2 drivers killed, 2 children injured in Putnam crash

Two drivers were killed and two youngsters injured early Sunday when a pickup truck and sport utility vehicle collided head-on in Putnam County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The pickup driver, Luis Cruz Clarrera, 46, of Crescent City, and SUV driver Elizabet Peralez, 21, of Pomona Park, died at the scene of the crash about 12:30 a.m. on U.S. 17 near Woodside Lane in Pomona Park, the Highway Patrol said.

10-year-old girl critical after near-drowning in Ponte Vedra Beach hotel pool

St. Johns County sheriff’s detectives are investigating the near-drowning of a 10-year-old girl shortly before midnight Saturday at the Hilton Garden Inn, 45 PGA Tour Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach.
The girl was in critical condition when taken to Baptist Medical Center Beaches then flown by air ambulance to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, according to Cmdr. Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
