London mayor meets Jaguars owner Shad Khan to talk football and soccer

Jaguars owner Shad Khan met over the weekend with London’s mayor in a meeting the mayor’s press office said involved discussions of “bringing more NFL games to London.”
Sadiq Khan tweeted after the Saturday morning meeting in Chicago: “Great to meet Shahid Khan today to talk about my drive to bring an @nfl franchise to London.”

Judge won't dismiss State Rep. Reggie Fullwood's fraud charges

State Rep. Reggie Fullwood’s fraud trial will go ahead as planned next month, a federal judge ruled Monday.
U.S. District Judge Marcia Morales Howard denied a motion by the Democratic lawmaker to dismiss 10 counts of wire fraud and let him simply address four charges of failing to file tax returns.
“The simple answer is the motion has to be denied,” Howard told attorneys who mapped out plans to launch the trial Oct. 11 and finish by Oct. 21, if not sooner.

 

First of three defendants goes on trial in murder of Jacksonville Navy commander

The death of a 44-year-old U.S. Navy commander in Orange Park remained a mystery for months as police refused to discuss anything about the investigation into his death.
But 31 months after the body of Alphonso Mortimer Doss was found at the Astoria Hotel, prosecutors will finally start spelling out the case of one of the men charged in his death Tuesday morning.
Anthony Delane Washington, 31, is the first of three people scheduled to go on trial in Doss’s death.

Strategies to help children are the topic of discussion at 9 p.m. Wednesday as Family Support Services of North Florida hosts its regular Breakfast Learning Series at the Schell-Sweet Community Resource Center at 1697 Kings Road in Jacksonville.
The free educational program on the campus of Edward Waters College begins with an 8:30 a.m. continental breakfast and networking session. Then Partnership for Child Health children’s ombudsman Garry Bevel will discuss solutions to family situations, including child-friendly, rights-based approaches.

Duval School Board member Shine accuses Chairman Smith Juarez of trying to oust Superintendent Vitti

Duval School Board member Scott Shine Sunday night accused Board Chairman Ashley Smith Juarez of plotting to vote to get rid of Superintendent Nikolai Vitti.
Shine said in an email late Sunday that Smith Juarez has tried to “coerce” Vitti to resign and that she just called a special board meeting for this Friday morning to hold a vote on whether to terminate Vitti “with minimal public input.”
