Americans kept health care spending in check for three years in a row, the government reported Monday, an unusual respite that could linger if the economy stays soft or fade like a mirage if job growth comes roaring back.

The government went back over its numbers and found something missing -- nearly 400,000 new jobs. In its annual revision to its employment data, the Labor Department said Thursday that 386,000 more jobs were created in the year ending in March than it originally had reported. The revision is a preliminary estimate, with a final figure coming in February.

 

Last Quarter’s Growth Is Revised Down Sharply

The United States government said the gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 1.3 percent in the spring, down from its previous estimate of 1.7 percent growth.
