Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said that police agencies can immediately begin enforcing the controversial “show me your papers” provision of the state’s landmark immigration law -- the section that was upheld by the U.S Supreme Court.

In oral arguments, both liberal and conservative justices indicate they may maintain a provision of the Arizona law that tells police to check the immigration status of people they stop.

The Supreme Court’s 5-to-3 decision on Thursday amounted to a green light for vigorous state efforts to combat the employment of illegal workers.
