A mother and her 7-year-old son have been reunited five years after the boy was kidnapped by his father and taken to Mexico, authorities said.

Left infertile after being abducted and raped as an 8-year-old back in 1990, Jennifer Schuett despaired of ever having a normal life – and a baby of her own. Schuett’s fallopian tubes had become blocked as a result of an infection she caught from her rapist, and her only hope was very expensive in-vitro fertilization.

A 72-year-old man was convicted Friday in the slaying of a 7-year-old Illinois girl snatched from a small-town street corner 55 years ago. Judge James Hallock pronounced Jack McCullough guilty of murder, kidnapping and abduction in one of the oldest cold-case murders to go to trial in the United States.

Authorities in the Atlanta area searched Wednesday for two children who were reported kidnapped by a stranger who offered to help the family when their car broke down on the side of an interstate highway.

The children, who were divided among three foster homes, were taken on Monday from an authorized group visit with their mother.

A 5-year-old girl was abducted from her Springfield house while she was sleeping early Saturday morning and assaulted outside the home before she returned, police said. Police were called to a townhouse in the 7000 block of Brocton Court shortly after 4 a.m. Detectives determined that an unknown man broke into the house sometime after midnight, went upstairs and took the girl from her bed. The victim’s parents and 1-year-old sibling were in the home at the time of the abduction, according to Fairfax County police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt.

After more than three decades in prison, a man in Florida was set free Thursday after a DNA test showed he did not kidnap and rape a 9-year-old boy in 1974.
