Google Inc injected social networking features into its popular Web email product as the world's No. 1 search engine seeks to fend off competition from Facebook and Twitter.

When Google Wave was unveiled at Google I/O back in May, we noted that it was one of the most ambitious projects we've ever seen. Started as a side project in Google's Sydney, Australia offices, it had the potential to significantly alter the way online communication was carried out. And Google was betting big on it.

Offline Gmail access is a product of Google Labs and will allow users to not only read and archive old emails but users will be able to compose emails that can be sent automatically the next time the computer connects to the internet.
