GM's Swedish brand remains hopeful a sale can be agreed to keep it alive, even though it is still preparing to wind down operations.

With a narrow, though loyal, customer base, Saab has proved too small to lure the world’s big automakers.

General Motors Corp. said Tuesday it has signed an agreement to sell its unit Saab Automotive to Sweden's Koenigsegg Group AB, confirming an announcement in June, although government officials warn that more capital is needed before the deal can be closed.

G.M is close to selling Saab to Koenigsegg, a Swedish maker of high-end sports cars, a person close to the negotiations said.

GM is in talks about turning its Saturn division over to Renault. Separately, China's Geely Automobile has submitted a bid to acquire GM's Saab unit.
