Facebook "Places" lets users track friends and services

Facebook

Facebook's 500 million-plus users will soon be able to track friends' whereabouts across the United States, as the world's largest Internet social network adds technology to increasingly tie its virtual world to everyday life.

Senh: These geolocation check-in sites/apps have been growing in popularity. I've seen a couple on my Twitter account. Still, I'm hesitant about using it. It's starting to get creepy. It's also beginning to be like The Matrix where everyone starts interacting in the virtual world instead of the REAL world with these virtual places.

Twitter hoping people will press its tweet button

Tweeting your favorite stories may be getting a little easier. Twitter introduced Thursday a "tweet" button that websites can place alongside their content. The button serves as an invitation to Twitter's legion of users to share what they're reading without having to copy and paste the Web link.

Senh: I guess since Facebook put out the "Like" button, it's Twitter's turn to put a "Tweet" button. The only thing is it's kinda redundant to Tweetmeme's retweet button, which a lot of websites, including this one, are already using.

Twitter's new policy for dead tweeters

Consider it a sign of the times, or even just success that Twitter now has a policy in place to handle ownership of a user's account once they've died.

Facebook's Foursquare competitor is imminent

The long-rumored geolocation "check-in" feature at Facebook is slated to debut within weeks, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CNET

Senh: Sure, go ahead. Twitter's already jumping into this geolocation stuff. I don't use Foursquare, so I don't know what the big deal is. I feel kinda creeped out by it. I always get these twitter messages from people who use it giving out the location. I really don't want people to know where I am, personally.

MySpace Bleeding Money; News Corp Promises 'Overhaul' Soon

The category of News Corp's business that includes MySpace lost $174 million in the fourth quarter, worse than the $136 million it lost in the same period last year, the parent company said on its earnings call this morning.

Senh: I wonder if more cuts are on the way, especially if the Google deal is significantly reduced. It's still the second largest social networking site on the web. Twitter, with all its hype, is still not making much money and lower traffic.

Why E-Commerce Is Flourishing

Services like Groupon and TheFind.com are using social media and other online tools to lure ever more customers.

The Only People Willing to Pay for Twitter Are Users with over 100K Followers

So far, I’ve only heard of two people who are willing to pay for Twitter - Guy kawasaki and Roger Ebert. If you search on Google, you’ll probably find more, but those are the only two I’ve read about. They have one thing in common - they each have over 100,000 followers.

Sites in Like, Not Love, With Facebook Link

Facebook's "Like" button is popping up on e-commerce sites, but these Web companies are giving access to some of their users' data to the social-networking giant.

Senh: This article does mention some stats on referral traffic from Facebook for sites using their social plugins, even though most of them are in the "we don't have enough info yet" variety.

Twitter Hits 20 Billion Tweets

There have now been more than 20 billion tweets since Twitter (Twitter)’s inception, according to tracking service GigaTweet. The milestone comes just two months after the service hit 15 billion tweets and about five months since it reached 10 billion, indicating that activity levels on the microblogging service continue to accelerate.

Senh: I'm actually not that impressed. I mean, MySpace was getting tens of billions of pageviews per month at their peak, so what's the big deal?
